Abstract The photoablation of polyimid was studied by time-resolved photography during the excimer laser pulse at 308 nm. Photographs showing successive instants of the formation of the etched craters demonstrate the fast-moving air-polymer interface. It is demonstrated experimentally that the polymer ablates layer by layer during the evolution of the UV laser pulse.
