Notes: Abstract The observation of chaos in a hybrid optical bistable device is reported. There is no delay line in this system. An investigation of the mechanism concentrates on a somewhat simplified structure. This structure is described by a third-order differential equation with quadratic nonlinearity. Its realization as an electronic circuit is studied in detail. As we observe patterns of universal behaviour, we also comment on the relation to iterative maps.
