Notes: Summary Optically active S-(+)- and R-(−)-N-vinyl-3-methyl-2-pyrrolidones are synthesized and radically polymerized using AIBN as the initiator. The resulting high molecular weight polymers are optically active and soluble in a wide variety of solvents including water. IR and 13CNMR spectra are reported and agree with a polyvinylic enchainment of the repeating units. The ORD and CD spectra of (+)poly-N-vinyl-3-methyl-2-pyrrolidone in methanol are described.
