Summary Cells of a β-lactamase producingE. coli strain were immobilized with acrylamide and lyophilized. The gel particles containing the entrapped cells were used like an immobilized enzyme to study the inactivation of β-lactam antibiotics. The substrate profile of the β-lactamase was determined and the action of β-lactamase inhibitors studied.
