Summary A mathematical model for describing the structure of a randomly formed flake layer network is presented. The structural properties of the flake network are random variables in essence characterized by Poisson and exponential distributions. The model predicts distribution of: flake centres, flake area coverage, free flake length, and void size over the flake layer network. A computer program for simulating the random flake network and rapidly evaluating structural properties is developed as well. In addition, the structural properties of hand-formed flake layers are experimentally measured. Close agreement is found between mathematical model prediction, computer simulation and experimental measurements.
