Summary Enzyme make-up of the adapted strain of Aspergillus niger was studied and compared with that of the parent strain. Sorbitol dehydrogenase and fructokinase were induced while glucokinase was repressed in the adapted strain. Intracellular accumulation of fructose in the parent strain failed to induce fructokinase suggesting a sequential induction of sorbitol dehydrogenase and fructokinase in the adapted strain. Studies on the enzymes of the hexose monophosphate pathway suggested elevated rate of operation of this pathway in the adapted strain. The levels of Fructose-1,6-diphosphate aldolase and Isocitrate dehydrogenase in the adapted and the parent strains and their implications on the citric acid producing capacities have been discussed. Sorbitol kinase could not be detected in the adapted strain.
