Zusammenfassung 1. Es wurde die Zusammensetzung und Biogenese der Carotinoide des aeroben, chemotrophen Bakteriums Pseudomonas echinoides und einiger seiner Mutanten untersucht. 2. Der Wildstamm enthält nur ein Polyen. Auf Grund unserer analytischen Daten handelt es sich mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit um ein 3,3′,5-Trioxy-5,6-dihydro-β-carotin. 3. Die Mutanten enthalten zusätzlich oder als einzige Carotinoide Lycopin, γ-Carotin, Phytoen und Phytofluen. 4. Die Biogenese des Wildstamm-Pigments verläuft vermutlich über Phytoen, Phytofluen, Lycopin und γ-Carotin.

Summary 1. The composition and biogenesis of the carotenoids in the aerobic chemotrophic bacterium Pseudomonas echinoides and in some of its mutants have been studied. 2. The wild strain contains one polyene only. Our data support the structure of this carotenoid to be a 3,3′,5-trioxi-5,6-dihydro-β-carotene. 3. The mutants possess in addition or as sole carotenoids lycopene, γ-carotene, phytoene, and phytofluene. 4. The biosynthesis of the pigment of the wild type strain seems to follow the pathway: phytoene→phytofluene→lycopene→γ-carotene.
