Abstract The use of sphere lenses of high refractive index material to improve the coupling efficiency between a light-emitting diode and an optical fibre is well known. A general method of calculating the coupling efficiency for such systems is described. The mathematical model is based on analytical geometry in vector notation. Experimental results obtained with GaAIAs-LED's and a step-index fibre are compared with the data from the theoretical evaluations.
