Summary Sclerotia ofSclerotium cepivorum Berk. when transferred from staled culture or from soil, were shown to be capable of growth in sterile distilled water. The fact that these propagules germinate readily in sterile conditions without the addition of nutrients indicate that antibiosis is one way by which fungi are maintained in a dormant condition in soil.
