Abstract A measure of the robustness R (0 ⩽R ⩽ 1)of nearest-neighbor relations in a multivariate scatter is proposed. Empirical study of the dependence of robustness on the number of attributes in a set of numerical taxonomic data suggests that a robustness of 0.95 would be attained with ~90 attributes, while a robustness of 0.99 would require ~1000 attributes.
