Abstract Lightweight cellular concretes are attractive building materials for a number of reasons: they offer a unique combination of moderate thermal insulation and stiffness, low cost and incombustibility. They have relatively low strength, however, and are brittle. In this paper we describe the behaviour of composite cement/polystyrene foams with improved strength and ductility.
