Abstract Adults of Chaoborus flavicans (Meigen) (Diptera: Chaoboridae) were observed in the laboratory. Newly emerged females contained well-developed oöcytes. Copulation was successfully induced using a method originally developed for mosquitoes. Copulation also took place naturally in a cage. Females could be induced to oviposit by decapitating them. Natural deposition of 18 to 387 eggs occurred on deionized water or on oak-leaf infusion. Naturally deposited eggs were arranged in a regular pattern within a gelatinous matrix. The eggs were smoky-gray in color and translucent, allowing observation of the developing embryos.
