Abstract We discuss some theoretical and practical considerations relating to achieving spatial resolution higher than ∼ γ/D, the nominal diffraction-limited resolution of a telescope of diameter D. Although the Nyquist criterion is often invoked as a justification for choosing pixel scales in array cameras, higher sampling densities are favored for imaging at and somewhat beyond the diffraction limit.
