It has been discovered that the facultative filter-feederN. diversicolor may meet its metabolic requirements on a pure diet of phytoplankton, just as a typical obligate filter-feeder. Consequently, this worm is likely to be a hitherto undervalued key organism in the control of phytoplankton production in many shallow brackish water areas.
