Abstract The modern methods of theoretical investigation of the structure and spectra of multielectron atoms and ions are briefly reviewed. The questions of taking into account the symmetry properties of the systems studied and the principles of construction of special mathematical machinery for atomic calculations are discussed. The stationary perturbation series is extended to atoms with several unfilled shells and explicit expressions are derived for the average characteristics of the spectra. Simplified methods for determining the radiative lifetimes are also examined.
