Summary 1. From the change in the intensity of the absorption band at 7µ it was established that a) oxidation of cellulose with oxides of nitrogen proceeds in its first stage with formation simultaneously of carboxy groups a and noncarboxy, intermediate products at C-6; b) oxidation of cellulose with sodium periodate is accompanied by partial oxidation at C-6. 2. The absorption band at 11µ characterizes the content of aldehyde groups present in dialdehydocellulose in the combined form.
