Summary 1. It was shown that, owing to the comparatively low tendency of vinyl sulfides to undergo ion-induced transformations, they give quantitative yields of polymers only in presence of the active ionic catalyst (BF3 · (C2H5)2O) under comparatively severe conditions of temperature. 2. As a chemical method for the determination of the molecular weight of the polymer, titration of vinylthio end groups was used. 3. It was shown that.considerably more vinyl sulfide polymer of low molecular weight is obtained under the conditions of ionic polymerization than under the conditions of free-radical polymerization.
