Abstract Optical studies demonstrated the noncorrespondence of the long-lived radicals formed in radiolysis of the trimer of hexafluoropropylene (THFP) to the previously proposed perfluoroallyl radical. The reaction of addition of fluorine at the double bond with the formation of long-lived perfluoroalkyl radicals in the liquid with an optical absorption band at γmax 〈 220 nm takes place in radiolysis and fluorination of THFP. Three types of photosensitive centers which are stable in a liquid and have different lifetime at 300 K were distinguished with the optical absorption spectrum of THFP undergoing radiolysis.
