Summary 1. Methods for obtaining substances possessing pharmacological activity, when substantial novelty is present, are protected by patents and authors' certificates where the applicant presents the materials of a satisfactory experimental test of the substance without clinical authorization. 2. New methods for obtaining known medicinal preparations are protected by patents and authors' certificates when the method possesses substantial novelty and utility and the identity of the substances obtained by the known and the new methods has been demonstrated. 3. Medicinal preparations are protected by authors' certificates, when substantial novelty exists, after due authorization of the substance by a subdivision of the Ministry of National Health of the USSR authorized for this purpose. 4. Combinations of known substances are protected by authors' certificates where a new “nonobvious” effect is achieved. 5. Biologically active substances are protected by authors' certificates when substantial novelty is present and the applicant presents information showing their definite pharmacological activity.
