Abstract A discrete chaotic process passed through a linear filter can behave like a stochastic, 1/f process. A stochastic description for 1/f processes is shown to be convenient where high-dimensional nonlinear systems are involved. Linear filtering can hide simple nonlinear, chaotic deterministic dynamics, and a method is presented for recovering these dynamics.
