Summary A new theory of the moon illusion based on visual size-constancy is advanced. It was possible to show that an object moving away from the observer in a horizontal plane remains constant in apparent size for a greater distance than an object moving in vertical plane. Therefore, the phenomenon of size-constancy holds for a shorter distance in the vertical than in the horizontal plane. This variation in the distance beyond which size-constancy breaks down accounts for the apparent change in the size of a distant object (e. g. the moon) between the horizontal and the vertical plane.
