The C=0 and N—H stretching vibrations of N-methylacetamide in solution were studied at different concentrations and temperatures. By means of bandfitting and using the second derivative, the C=O stretching band (Amide I) was resolved into four component bands. An assignment of these frequencies is discussed. The band splitting of amide I indicates the presence of cis-trans isomerism about the peptide (—CO—NH—) link and a frequency shift of the free C=O end groups of associated molecules. The H-bond enthalpy seems to be influenced by the chain length of the associates.
