Notes:
cis-1,4-Polybutadiene (PBD) was reacted with a number of sulfenyl derivatives to produce adducts of varying degrees of saturation. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the modified polymer increases with extent of reaction with p-toluenesulfenyl chloride (1c) and 2-nitrobenzenesulfenyl benzoate (2a). DSC traces indicate a “blocky” structure in adducts of 1c but not of 2a. The tensile strengths at break of the adducts of 1c show a progressive increase with increasing degree of saturation.
