The Crystal multicomputer at the Computer Sciences Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison allows the exploration of parallel numerical algorithms by providing a collection of loosely-coupled minicomputers of substantial computing power (currently, twenty VAX 11/750's) that can exchange data in an efficient manner via messages. Very promising results have already been obtained through through the use of Crystal on nonlinear traffic assignment problems. Additional applications of Crystal are in progress for generalized network flow problems. SOR methods for linear programming, and multigrid methods.
