Preparation and Crystal Structure of Dicaesium PentatellurideMicrocrystalline Cs2Te5 results from stoichiometric batches of the pure elements in supercritical ammonia. Cs2Te5 is orthorhombic, space group Cmcm, with a = 9.379 Å, b = 12.282 Å, c = 10.128 Å, Z = 4. The crystal structure was refined from single crystal diffractometer data to a conventional R-factor of 0.041 for 756 observations. The tellurium atoms form sixmembered rings with chair-configuration, which are connected via common vertices to infinite one-dimensional chains ∞1[(Te4Te2/2)2-]. Cs2Te5 is the first example in the group of polychalcogenides with this unexpected arrangement of chalcogen atoms. It will be compared with other polychalcogenides. The relationships of the [(Te4Te2/2)]2--ion to compounds AL4 like XeF4 will be discussed.

Mikrokristallines Cs2Te5 entsteht aus stöchiometrischen Ansätzen der reinen Elemente in überkritischem Ammoniak. Cs2Te5 kristallisiert orthorhombisch in der Raumgruppe Cmcm mit Z = 4 und hat folgende Gitterkonstanten: a = 9,379 Å, b = 12,282 Å, c = 10,128 Å.In der Struktur liegt ein eindimensional-unendliches Polyanion ∞1[(Te4Te2/2)2-] vor, welches aus spitzenverknüpften Tellur-Sechsringen aufgebaut wird. Die Struktur des Cs2Te5 wird sowohl mit denen der anderen bekannten Polychalkogenide M2Xn als auch auf der Grundlage des Konzepts von Zintl und Klemm mit pseudooktaedrisch gebauten Verbindungen AL4 verglichen.
