Contributions to the Chemistry of Hydrazine and its Derivatives. XLVII. Partial Reduction of the Nitrogen Molecule to the N24--ion by means of BariumThermal reaction of barium with nitrogen yields besides of the N3- ion by partial reduction of the N2 molecule the N24- ion. The new ion is protonated to hydrazine. The composition of the reaction product depends on temperature and reaction time. After 50 hrs. at 380-400°C the product evolves on hydrolysis up to 31% of its nitrogen content as hydrazine. It is excluded that the new compound Ba2N2 is formed by pernitridation of Ba3N2.
Notes:
