Description / Table of Contents:
The free enthalpies of possible reactions between CaC2 and Al2O3 are calculated as a function of temperature.A method for the volumetric determination of acetylene from small amounts of CaC2 is described. The solid-state reaction between CaC2 and Al2O3 at 1250°C yields graphite and a phase of the composition CaO · Al1,9O2C0,4. This compound has been characterized by X-ray and infrared spectrograms. The carbon content is hydrolysed to CH4. The new phase has to be regarded as a product of partial carbonization of the Al2O3. Analogous experiments with the presence of CaO yield the aluminates 3 CaO · Al2O3, 12 CaO · 7 Al2O3, CaO · Al2O3 and CaO · 2 Al2O3, in order of increasing Al2O3 content of the reaction mixture. The new carboxide was also obtained by reaction in the melt at about 2000°C.
Notes:
