In order to test the accuracy of a thermobalance the thermal decomposition of calcium oxalate and of precipitated calcium was examined. The anhydrous oxalate is already instable at a temperature of 300° and is decomposing slowly under generation of carbon monoxide. For that reason the computation of the atomic weight of carbon from the levels of the pyrolysis curve of calcium oxalate is impossible. An average error of about ± 0,08 mg. at a single weighing is derived from the CaCO3 to CaO ratio observed at the thermal decomposition of the carbonate. From the arithmetical analysis of the experiments it becomes evident that accurate results are obtained only under consideration of the buoyancy of the substance, the crucible, and the crucible bearer dependent on the temperature.

Zur Prüfung der Genauigkeit einer Thermowaage wurden die Zersetzungskurven von Calciumoxalat und gefälltem Calciumcarbonat aufgenommen. Es zeigte sich, daß das wasserfreie Calciumoxalat schon bei 300 °C instabil ist und sich langsam unter Entwicklung von Kohlenmonoxyd zersetzt. Daher ist die Bestimmung des Atomgewichts von Kohlenstoff aus den Stufen der Zersetzungskurve des Oxalats nicht möglich. Aus den beim thermischen Zerfall des Calciumcarbonats gefundenen CaCO3:CaO-Gewichtsverhältnissen wurde der mittlere Fehler einer einzelnen Wägung auf der Waage zu etwa ± 0,08 mg ermittelt. Aus der numerischen Auswertung der Versuche ergibt sich, daß genaue Ergebnisse bei thermogravimetrischen Arbeiten nur unter Berücksichtigung des temperaturabhängigen Auftriebs von Substanz, Tiegel und Tiegelträger erhalten werden.
