Notes:
N-(1-Haloalkyl)azinium halides react with methyl 3-amino-2-butenoate to yield 4-substituted dimethyl 1,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-3,5-pyridinedicarboxylates. The rates of formation of the latter compounds are monitored by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Mechanistic and practical considerations are discussed.
