N.M.R. Spectroscopic Investigation of the Conformation and Reactivity of Cyclopropylbenzenes1)The predominant ground state conformation for a series of cyclopropyl-substituted benzenes is cvaluated on the basis of the additional diamagnetic shielding of the aromatic protons due to cyclopropyl ring anisotropy. Van der Waals interaction between the methyl group and o-aryl hydrogens enforces lhe electronically unfavourable symmetrical conformation in l-methylcyclopropyl compounds, whereas in the case of cyclopropylbenzenes unsubstituted in the three-membered ring a temperature-dependent equilibrium exists between bisected (F) and symmetrical (G) orientation. The l-methylcyclopropyl group is also less effective in stabilizing the positive charge in the transition state of electrophilic substitution than cyclopropyl itself. o-Br or o-NO2 substituents firmly hold the l-methylcyclopropyl moiety in the symmetrical conformation, while C3H5 is twisted by only ∼15° from the bisected orientation, with the three membered ring in syn-position to the o-hydrogens. Evidence for this are increased shielding of these protons and high reactivity towards electrophilic substitution.
Notes:
