Notes: d,l-Carnitin wird durch Verseifen von d,l-Carnitin-nitril dargestellt, das aus α-Dichlorhydrin oder Epichlorhydrin über γ-Chlor-β-oxybutyronitril und Trimethylamin erhalten wird. Leichte Wasser-Abspaltbarkeit kann zu Crotonsäure-Derivaten führen, die die chemische Identifizierung als Goldsalz stören.
