Notes:
Virgin mosquitoes were studied with the electron microscope. Spermathecal duct walls contain cuticle, epithelium, and a richly innervated spiral muscle; myocytes are linked by desmosome-like attachment plaques to the underlying epithelium. Periductal cells along upper portions of the ducts have a large secretory droplet within a highly irregular extracellular lacuna and are attached to a long secretory ductule through which finely granular material is delivered to the duct lumen and this enters the spermathecae. Basal gland cells of spermathecae have short ductules containing secretion in virgins. Secretory material in spermathecae of virgins does not form a complete internal membrane.
