Notes:
Polycarbonate was recycled in a capillary rheometer at high constant shear stresses (0.15-0.95 MPa) and at temperatures between 275 and 320°C. Changes in melt viscosity and molecular weight were evaluated. Significant polymer degradation was observed on repetitive extrusion. An activation energy of 113 kJ/mol was determined for the initial stages of the process. The degradation kinetics were in agreement with a non-random chain scission. It was concluded that bonds were more susceptible to scission the closer they were to the middle of the polymer molecule and that the extent of degradation increased with an increase in molecular weight.
