Description / Table of Contents: Watch out for bacterial corrosion in refineriesCorrosion in underground structures, cooling systems and storage facilities of the petroleum industry is often due to microorganisms which may destroy organic coatings, form  -  by metabolism  -  aggressive acids and  -  by oxidation of iron  -  produce slimy deposits under which there are favorable conditions for the growth of anaerobic bacteria; such deposits may further give rise to aeration cells which, too enhance corrosion. Growth conditions in the soil are often improved by digging operations. For combatting this type of corrosion bactericides should be used first (chlorine, chlorphenols ets.) however, care should be taken because of the possible agressivity of such products. For preventing bacterial corrosion, porefree coatings are most suitable (in addition to the purification of the medium) as regards cathodic protection, a direct effect on bacterial corrosion has not been established so far.
