Conversion was measured in small packed-bed reactors containing immobilized glucoamylase in a range of variables in which diffusion was an important limitation. Three sets of data involving two carriers and two temperatures agreed satisfactorily with the theory of simultaneous reaction and diffusion.Several reactors were designed for 99% conversion, and the results show that diffusion is a small problem when feed concentration is high but a serious problem at low concentration, requiring careful design of the catalyst. The particle size needed to eliminate the effect of diffusion is shown as a function of length.
