Notes:
Bromine anions from polybrominated biphenyls and bromobenzenes form in great abundance by dissociative electron capture. Nitrogen reagent gas moderates bromine expulsion more than does methane. The relationship between bromine anion to molecular anion ratio and the number of bromine atoms in the molecule is logarithmic. Asymmetric arrangement of bromine atoms favors decreased bromine anion formation. Increased source temperature favors dissociative electron capture, but also decreases sensitivity. The apparent composition of polybrominated biphenyl mixtures is strongly influenced by the range of masses scanned if bromine anions are excluded.
