The following report is a synthesis of the main results of the OECD Cooperative Programme on Eutrophication. It is the outcome of several years' concerted effort by 18 Member countries. The objectives were to establish, through international cooperation, a basis for eutrophication control of inland waters (lakes and reservoirs in particular), and to develop better guidelines for fixing nutrient load criteria compatible with water use objectives.
The present report is both complementary and supplementary to the four Regional Project Reports (2) already published. In parallel with the OECD study programme, progress has been made in other areas, particularly in dynamic modelling.
The results of the OECD study and approach have already been successfully applied in several instances in North America, Europe and elsewhere. It can be anticipated that 0- while knowledge of eutrophication and its control methods are advancing -- the OECD results presented here will continue to provide a basic reference in eutrophication control studies.
