    Description: The pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, one of the most successful invasive species worldwide, inhabits intertidal and shallow subtidal marine and mixohaline coastal waters. In Argentina the species colonized natural ecosystems of southern Buenos Aires and northern Patagonia. However, in the last years the presence of oysters in the coast of Punta Rasa, northern Buenos Aires, was reported. Therefore, with the aim of recognizing the identity of the species, an exploratory survey in the salt marshes close to San Clemente stream was carried out. Individuals were identified as C. gigas (shell height up to 37 mm, density up to ~390 ind. m-2). Oysters were found clumped in small reefs in muddy substrates mixed with shell debris, attached to the stems of Spartina alterniflora, plastic bags, wooden sticks or other mollusks shells. The origin of the oyster banks could be linked to the establishment of C. gigas experimental farms in Las Toninas (20 km away from the study area) in the late 90's. Basic research on the species and its potential impact on local ecosystems should be undertaken in the short term.
    Description: La ostra del pacífico Crassostrea gigas, una de las especies invasoras más exitosas del mundo, habita las zonas del intermareal y submareal somero de aguas mixohalinas y marinas costeras. En la Argentina la especie colonizó los ecosistemas naturales del sur de Buenos Aires y norte de la Patagonia. Sin embargo, en los últimos años se ha reportado la presencia de ostras en la costa de Punta Rasa, al norte de Buenos Aires. Por ello, con el objeto de reconocer la identidad de la especie, se llevó a cabo una campaña de exploración en las marismas saladas cerca del arroyo San Clemente. Los individuos se identificaron como C. gigas (tallas hasta 37 mm de alto, densidad hasta ~390 ind. m-2). Las ostras se encontraron formando pequeños arrecifes sobre un sustrato fangoso con restos de conchillas entremezcladas, adheridas a los tallos de Spartina alterniflora, bolsas plásticas, madera o valvas de otros moluscos. El origen de los bancos podría estar vinculado con la instalación de cultivos experimentales de C. gigas en Las Toninas (a 20 km de la zona de estudio) a fines de la década de los noventa. Se deberían realizar, a corto plazo, investigaciones básicas sobre la especie y su potencial impacto en los ecosistemas locales
