Description: The relationship between the surficial iron mineralogy and economic mineralization is investigated, using data from an airborne imaging spectrometer (the 63-channel Geophysical and Environmental Research Imaging Spectrometer) to map the distribution of iron minerals in the Cripple Creek mining district in Colorado. The airborne image data were coregistered with the field map data for the distribution of iron oxides in the district, in a geographic information computer system, in order to compare their information content. It is shown that the remote imagery was able to uniquely identify the mineral hematite, a mixture of goethite/jarosite, and a mixture of hematite/goethite.
