Magnetostriction and thermal expansion measurements have been carried out on polycrystalline RE2Fe14B permanent magnets (RE=Nd, Ho, Dy, and Y) between 4.2 K and room temperature in pulsed magnetic fields up to 15 T. Nd2Fe14B exhibits an anisotropic magnetostriction which amounts to λt=−308×10−6 at 4.2 K and −96×10−6 at 300 K at 15 T. In the whole series magnetostriction at low temperatures is dominated by the RE contribution. The volume magnetostriction has been also determined for all the compounds and increases with temperature, which is the behavior for Y2Fe14B. Linear thermal expansion has been measured for RE=Nd and Y in the range of 77–300 K, showing for Nd2Fe14B an anomaly at the spin reorientation temperature (TSR=115 K) and a large invar effect.
