Summary The ligand control in the complex chemical system bis(-μ-methyl-1,3-dimethyl-η3-allylnickel)/P-ligand/carbon monoxide is discussed. By varying the P-ligand/nickel ratio ([L]0/[Ni]0) over a three orders of magnitude range, the selectivity of the decomposition and of the CO-insertion (ligand concentration control) was analyzed and compared with the range of step-wise ligand associations, identified by31P-n.m.r. spectroscopy. Investigations of the range of existence of the complexes, the degree of CO-absorption and the selectivity of the products formed by means of ligand concentration control maps lead to a subsystem scheme for this system, describing the relations of the various species involved. A method for quantitatively separating the ligand concentration control (derivable from the range of existence of the species) from the property specific ligand control (chemical behaviour of the species) is given.
