Synopsis This study examined the effects of various pH values on sperm motility times of white suckers,Catostomus commersoni, from two artificially acidified lakes in the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), northwestern Ontario. White sucker sperm were active (motile) in water at all pH values tested (3.0–7.0). The maximum sperm motility time was 76.9 seconds and the minimum time was 51.9 seconds. Sperm motility times of fish from Lake 302N were similar to those of fish from Lake 223 at all pH values except pH 5.0 and 5.5. At these two pH values, sperm motility times of Lake 223 fish were longer than those of Lake 302N fish. In both lakes sperm motility at ambient lake pH levels (Lake 223 + 5.1, Lake 302N + 6.3) were similar to those at pH 7.0. Motility times of all fish tested were within the range of time during which fertilization normally occurs, indicating that reproductive failures in Lake 223 were probably not caused by impairment of sperm motility times.
