Description / Table of Contents: Summary Assuming equilibrium of ionization $$\left( {\frac{{dN}}{{dt}} = 0} \right)$$ the equation is derived which must be satisfied to obtain one or more maxima of electron concentrationN, if any variation of temperature and recombination coefficient is given. The latter case related to the well-known splitting into theF 1 andF 2-layer is treated numerically. First it is shown that, with constant temperature, the recombination coefficient must be a function of height in a most improbable way as to cause splitting so that this case should hardly occur in reality. Contrarily, a layer of warm air within theF-level causes, under altogether reasonable and obvious assumptions on temperature and temperature gradient, a splitting which is in good agreement with observations. In this case the recombination coefficient is asumed to be directly proportional to the square of temperature.
