Summary For spectrochemical microanalysis, 1–10 mg of steel turnings are dissolved and the iron extracted with ethyl ether from 6.5N hydrochloric acid. The elements which accompany the iron into the ether phase, after reduction with sodium dithionite, are extracted with ether in the form of their thiocyanate complexes. It is not possible to separate Au, As, Sb, and Tl from iron by this method. The thiocyanate extracts are united with the original hydrochloric phase, and the elements contained in it are studied together in high tension arc spectroanalytically by theFeuβner procedure. The method can be used for Mn, Cu, M, Cr, V, W, AI, Ti, Zn, Sn, and Zr and other elements of little importance in steel analysis.
