Summary In the endeavour to discover a micro method for the determination of potassium which should not only be sufficiently accurate, but also selective enough to permit of the determination of this element in mineral waters in the presence of all the usual accompanying substances, an examination was made of the method of precipitating potassium with magnesium dipicrylaminate. It was found possible to surmount the considerable experimental difficulties inherent in this method—especially when only small amounts of substance are in question—and to devise a procedure for the accurate micro-determination of potassium. As an important further step towards the attainment of the above-mentioned object, the precipitation of potassium by the reagent in the presence of a large excess of sodium was investigated; in this instance also a procedure can be given whereby a sufficiently reliable and exact micro-determination of potassium may be carried out relatively simply in the presence of a hundred-fold excess of sodium.
Abstract:
Résumé Nous avons examiné la précipitation du potassium avec dipicrylaminomagnésium dans l'effort de trouver un micro-dosage du potassium non seulement suffisamment exact mais aussi assez sélectif, qui permettra de doser directement le potassium, par exemple dans les eaux minérales auprès d'autres ions présents. On réussit a surmonter les difficultés expérimentelles considérables, qui s'opposent a l'application de cette méthode en général — en particulier à l'application à des petites quantités de substance — et à élaborer ainsi des instructions pour un micro-dosage exact du potassium. On a examiné d'abord la précipitation du potassium avec ce réactif, la quantité du sodium étant bien dominante, comme premier essais en égard du but proposé au commencement. Il était possible de trouver une modification de la méthode, qui permet d'effectuer assez sûrement et exactement une micro-détermination du potassium d'une manière relativement simple, même quand le contenu en sodium excède celui du potassium de cent fois.

Zusammenfassung In dem Bestreben, eine nicht nur genügend exakte, sondern auch weitgehend selektive Mikro-Kaliumbestimmung zu finden, die es beispielsweise bei der Mikroanalyse von Mineralwässern gestatten sollte, das Kalium neben allen in Betracht kommenden Ionen unmittelbar zu bestimmen, überprüften wir die Kaliumfällung mit Dipikrylaminmagnesium. Es gelang, die beträchtlichen experimentellen Schwierigkeiten vollständig zu überwinden, die sich bei der Anwendung dieser Methode überhaupt — insbesondere aber bei der Anwendung auf kleine Substanzmengen — ergaben, und die Vorschrift für eine exakte Mikro-Kaliumbestimmung auszuarbeiten. Als erster und wichtigster weiterer Schritt im Hinblick auf das eingangs erwähnte Ziel wurde ferner die Fällung des Kaliums mit diesem Reagens neben weit vorherrschenden Natriummengen untersucht. Auch hier konnte der Weg gezeigt werden, der eine genügend sichere und exakte Mikrobestimmung des Kaliums noch neben der hundertfachen Natriummenge in verhältnismäßig einfacher Weise gestattet.
