    Journal available for loan
Oakland, California : EERI Earthquake Engineering Research Institute
    Call number: Z 91.0813
Description / Table of Contents: On June 23, 2001, the region of southern Peru and northern Chile was shaken by a Mw 8.4 earthquake, arguably the largest worldwide since 1965. Approximately 80 people were killed and 70 missing and presumed dead. In all, the earthquake affected more than 200,000 people. It was the result of thrust faulting on the boundary between the Nazca and South American plates. Structural damage was concentrated on adobe houses and historical constructions, but a significant number of engineered structures were damaged, mostly attributable to short–column effects. There was widespread damage to the highway system, and a destructive tsunami caused significant damage. This issue is a product of the combined efforts of several reconnaissance teams. Other topics covered include seismicity, ground motion and site response, ground failure, geotechnical effects; lifelines, and societal impacts.

Oakland, California : EERI Earthquake Engineering Research Institute
    Call number: Z 91.0813
Description / Table of Contents: This 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in the state of Gujarat in western India. Approximately 14,000 lives were lost and over 167,000 persons injured. Damage was spread over a radius of 400 kilometers from the epicenter. The first major quake to hit an urban area of India in the last 50 years, it caused extensive liquefaction and slope failures but no primary surface fault rupture. The resulting net economic loss is estimated to be about US $5 billion. This volume is a joint report from the combined EERI-NSF team. It covers the seismotectonic setting; local geological and geotechnical effects; performance of buildings, lifelines, and other structures and facilities; and social and governmental response.

Washington, D.C. : George Washington University
Description / Table of Contents: This handbook is for any educator teaching a topic that includes data analysis or computation in order to support learning. It is not just for educators teaching courses in engineering or science, but also data journalism, business and quantitative economics, data-based decision sciences and policy, quantitative health sciences, and digital humanities. It aims to provide an entry point, and a broad overview of Jupyter in education. Whether you are already using Jupyter to teach, you have found learning materials built on Jupyter that piqued your curiosity, or have never heard of Jupyter, the material in this open book can empower you to use this technology in your teaching. Project Jupyter is a broad collaboration that develops open-source tools for interactive and exploratory computing. The tools include: over 100 computer languages (with a focus on Python), the Jupyter Notebook, JupyterHub, and an ecosystem of extensions contributed by a large community. The Jupyter Notebook has exploded in popularity since late 2014, fueled by its adoption as the favorite environment for doing data science. It has also grown as a platform to use in the classroom, to develop teaching materials, to share lessons and tutorials, and to create computational stories. Notebooks are documents containing text narratives with images and math, combined with executable code (many languages are supported) and the output of that code. This marriage of content and code makes for a powerful new form of data-based communication. Educators everywhere are adopting Jupyter for teaching. Educators newly adopting Jupyter can be overwhelmed by having to navigate the ecosystem of tools and content. They could study many examples, or consume a myriad of blog posts and videos of talks to distill the patterns of good practices and technical solutions to serve their students best. Several early adopters, having much experience to share, decided to begin collecting this know-how, and share open documentation about using Jupyter for teaching and learning. The result is this open book: a living document that captures the experiences of community members using Jupyter in education. The Jupyter Community Workshop in Washington, DC (November 2018) began that process, with a book sprint aimed at producing the first version of this handbook. The collaboratively written book consolidates explanations and examples covering key topics, including: what is Jupyter, how to try Jupyter, sharing notebooks with students, locally installing Jupyter, cloud offerings, finding example notebooks, writing lessons in Jupyter, making collections for a course, exporting to other formats with nbconvert, writing textbooks with Jupyter, using Binder and JupyterHub, making assignments and auto-grading, making online courses, teaching with Jupyter in the classroom, active learning and flipped learning pedagogies with Jupyter, and guiding learners to create their own content in Jupyter. This open handbook will grow to encompass all you need to know about Jupyter in teaching and learning.

Description / Table of Contents: The monograph shows zonal arid regional conformities of the composition formation and cryogenic structure of rocks in the north of West Siberia, revealed on the basis of long-term field investigations. Syngenetic permafrost and epigenetic permafrost are described. The connection of cryogenic structure and iciness of rocks with structural-tectonic factors has been observed. It is the first time when the salinity of cryogenic strata for the whole thickness and primary marine chloridesodium type of Quaternary sediments salinity were determined. The horizon of cooled saline rocks in a wide regional plan is picked out and observed. The deposits of massive ice bed have been characterized and studied in detail with the use of a number of methods. The materials presented have been widely used for a long time to develop the projects on oil and gas deposits development, pipeline construction and other objects and also for geocryological forecast for the creation of territorial complex scheme of nature protection. The monograph is intended for wide circle of geologists, geographers who are interested in Quaternary permafrost deposits of arctic low lands in Russia.
Description / Table of Contents:

Description / Table of Contents: In this book Peter Diamond analyzes social security as a particular example of optimal taxation theory. Assuming a world of incomplete markets and asymmetric information, he uses a variety of simple models to illuminate the economic forces that bear on specific social security policy issues. The focus is on the degree of progressivity desirable in social security and the design of incentives to delay retirement beyond the earliest age of eligibility for benefits. Before analyzing these models, Diamond presents introductions to optimal income tax theory and the theory of incomplete markets. He incorporates recent theoretical developments such as time-inconsistent preferences into his analyses and shows that distorting taxes and a measure of progressivity in benefits are desirable. Diamond also discusses social security reform, with a focus on Germany.

Description / Table of Contents: Profiles of particulate and dissolved 234Th (t1/2=24.1 days) in seawater and particulate 234Th collected in drifting traps were analyzed in the Barents Sea at five stations during the ALV3 cruise (from June 28 to July 12, 1999) along a transect from 78°15′N–34°09′E to 73°49′N–31°43′E. 234Th/238U disequilibrium was observed at all locations. 234Th data measured in suspended and trapped particles were used to calibrate the catchment efficiency of the sediment traps. Model-derived 234Th fluxes were similar to 234Th fluxes measured in sediment traps based on a steady-state 234Th model. This suggests that the sediment traps were not subject to large trapping efficiency problems (collection efficiency ranges from 70% to 100% for four traps). The export flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) can be calculated from the model-derived export flux of 234Th and the POC/234Th ratio. POC/234Th ratios measured in suspended and trapped particles were very different (52.0±9.9 and 5.3±2.2 μmol dpm−1, respectively). The agreement between calculated and measured POC fluxes when the POC/234Th ratio of trapped particles was used confirms that the POC/234Th ratio in trap particles is representative of sinking particles. Large discrepancies were observed between calculated and measured POC fluxes when the POC/234Th ratio of suspended particles was used. In the Barents Sea, vertical POC fluxes are higher than POC fluxes estimated in the central Arctic Ocean and the Beaufort Sea and lower than those calculated in the Northeast Water Polynya and the Chukchi Sea. We suggest that the latter fluxes may have been strongly overestimated, because they were based on high POC/234Th ratios measured on suspended particles. It seems that POC fluxes cannot be reliably derived from thorium budgets without measuring the POC/234Th ratio of sediment trap material or of large filtered particles.

Description / Table of Contents: The North Taymyr ice-marginal zone (NTZ) on the Taymyr Peninsula, Arctic Siberia and the Ugleelv Valley on Jameson Land, East Greenland, have been investigated with the aim of reconstructing the glacial history, including depositional processes and environments. Geomorphological, sedimentological, stratigraphical and remote sensing methods have been combined to give a comprehensive view of developments in the two areas. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon (14 C) dates provide the chronological control. The Kara Sea shelf was glaciated three times during the Weichselian, each time with a smaller ice cover than before. The ice sheets caused a reversal of the fluvial drainage towards the south on the Taymyr Peninsula and, during the Early-Middle Weichselian, also the damming of proglacial lakes. The youngest ice-advance, but probably also the older ones, was warm-based and ‘surge-like’. After it had reached its maximum position, the margin froze to its base and compressional flow took place there. The North Taymyr ice-marginal zone (NTZ) was initiated during an Early Weichselian retreat stage (c. 80 ka BP) and added to during the Middle (c. 65 ka BP) and Late Weichselian (〈20 ka BP) ice advances, thus revealing a complex history. It comprises ice-marginal and supraglacial landsystems dominated by 2-3 km wide thrust-block moraines. Large areas are still underlain by remnant glacier ice and a supraglacial landscape with numerous ice-walled lakes and kames is forming even today. The proglacial landsystem is characterised by subaqueous or terrestrial environments, depending on altitude and time of formation. The sedimentary succession in the Ugleelv area comprises three tills, glaciolacustrine, glaciofluvial and aeolian sediments. The depositional history started in the early Saalian with a prograding delta in a lake dammed by an outlet glacier in Scoresby Sund. Soon thereafter, and also once during the Weichselian, Jameson Land was inundated by glaciers emanating from Liverpool Land in the east. These glaciers were warm-based and deposited glaciofluvial sediments, local tills and small end moraines. Conditions were less dynamic later in the glacial cycles. During most of the Weichselian the Ugleelv area was ice free and aeolian activity took place, but in the late Saalian the Greenland ice sheet expanded eastwards over the area. This ice was mainly cold- based but in places temporarily warm-based, where a lodgement till was deposited. During deglaciation there was substantial glaciofluvial erosion. The Kara Sea ice sheet and the Greenland ice sheet behave differently through a glacial cycle. The shelf-centred Kara Sea ice experiences large shifts in areal extent and disappears completely during interglacials. ‘Individual’ ice advances seem to be gover- ned by internal ice dynamics rather than by climatic changes. Contrary to this, the Greenland ice sheet is relatively stable and the climatically driven expansion or retreat of its outlet glaciers through the fjords represents the major changes.
