    In:  Notes from the Leyden Museum (1872-9231) vol.31 (1909) nr.1 p.207
    Publication Date: 2014-11-24
Description: Among a collection of birds from Western Java, collected for our Museum through the good offices of Mr. E, Jacobson, there are examples of two species, which offer slight differences with specimens from other parts of our Archipelago, so that it seems to me necessary to describe one of them as new subspecies and to explain, that the name given to the other one, must be restricted only to the form from Java. Six specimens of a Gerygone I determined as G. modiglianii Salvadori, but as our birds did not fully agree with the description by Count Salvadori (Ann. Mus. Civ. Genova, XXXII, 1892, p. 52) I sent one specimen to that gentleman, with the request to compare it with the types of G. modiglianii. Count Salvadori most kindly, answered me: » I have compared your Gerygone with two typical specimens of my G. modiqlianii; although very similar it differs in having the upper part and the sides of the head somewhat paler and the lores decidedly more white. The differences are not great, but if constant, as most probably they are, your bird belongs to a distinct form.” As the colour of the upper parts is the same and also the white loral spot is conspicuous in five old birds, four males and one female, I describe here the form from Java under the name of: Gerygone modiglianii jacobsoni nov. subsp.

Description: Before my departure to Java I intended to give a monographic revision of the Neuropteroidea of Insulinde, but want of time and of sufficient materials forced me to give up this intention and I restricted it to the monographic revision of the MECOPTERA and PLANIPENNIA, the two orders I studied with special attention since 3 years in behalf of the „Catalogue des collections du baron E. de Sélys Lougchamps”. The territories that I name Insulinde are the Dutch colonies of the malayan and papuan archipelago. I describe also the species known from those parts of Borneo and New Guinea, that do not belong to the dutch possessions, as they very probably also will occur in them. Those of neighbouring countries are noted so far as they are important for comparison.

Description: Close to and much resembling P. lugubris Rits. from Nias (N. L. M. vol. XIV, 1892, p. 215), but smaller (measuring 26 mm. in length) and more vividly colored. Above opaque, the smaller basal half of the elytra, however, shining. — Head dark blue with green tinges, red in the middle beneath. 1st, 2nd and basal half of 3rd antennal joint dark blue, apical half of 3rd joint and the 4th—7th joints yellow, the 7th spotted with black at the apex above, the subsequent joints black. — Prothorax red, front- and basal margins dark blue, the latter surrounding the coxae and invading the intercoxal part. Without any trace of spine or tubercle laterally; the disk flat, strongly punctured, sharply separated from the sides as if it were a piece led in; the sides and undersurface finely, evenly and very densely punctured, forming a lustreless surface. Scutellum dark blue, with black pubescence. — Elytra metallic green, the smaller basal half bald, shining, rather densely punctured, the larger apical half opaque, very finely and densely punctured and covered with a short and very dense black pubescence; at one third of its length this black portion is crossed by a very narrow transverse band of a pale yellowish pubescence, touching neither the suture nor the lateral margins, and a similar though still more delicate pubescence is present on the shining green basal half just before the black pubescence. — Meso- and metasternum and the abdomen steelblue, the latter more greenish towards the apex and covered by a silky white pile, especially on the hindborders. The legs steel-blue, the femora strongly punctured, the tibiae more finely. The 5th ventral segment broadly and deeply emarginate, the 6th broadly but less deeply. Hab. Borneo: Mahakkam river. — The described malespecimen has been presented to the Leyden Museum by Prof. A. W. Nieuwenhuis, to whom I dedicate the species.

Description: This new subspecies differs from the „ Priority-Form” of Th. clavicornis Horn by the larger size and by having the front between the orbital-parts a little less excavated, the two small punctiform impressions at the posterior disk of the front generally more developed, the extreme apex of each elytron less transversely (more obliquely) truncated and the punctuation of the elytra becoming hardly smaller and only a little less dense (than at its anterior half) behind the middle. The pattern consists of a narrow (but little curvated) whitish or whitish yellow line, running from the middle of the length of the lateral margin in a moderately oblique direction towards the suture (touching neither the margin nor the suture), a large whitish yellow spot at the apex, tapering behind and distinctly though irregularly enlarged towards the disk of the posterior half of the elytra, a long and broad yellow lunular humeral spot, not sharply defined and running, increasing in breadth, down till near the middle of the oblique whitish central line, an indistinct yellow basal-sutural line, which takes its origin at or near to the humeral angle, running to the suture and following the latter down till about the first third of its length, where it flows together with the central third or with the posterior half of the humeral lunular spot. Sometimes almost the whole yellow pattern of the elytra is indistinctly confluent. The metasternal middlepiece is whitish yellow or dark, the posterior coxae are whitish yellow. ♀ ♂ . Without labrutn 7¾ — 8½ mm.

Description: Mutilla horrida Fr. Smith, Descr. new spec. Hym. Coll. Brit. Mus.l879,p.l92,♀.

Description: The female of this species has been described by the Hon. N. C. Rothschild in Novitates Zoologicae, Vol. 12, p. 483 (pl. XIII, fig. 6). The author states that it is allied to Ceratophyllus ahalae Rothsch., and indeed the head of the ♂ of this species, judging from the figure given by the British Suctoriologist in Novit. Zool. Vol. 11, pl. XI, fig. 51, resembles that of the present species as two peas. The male apparatus, however, differs, though not widely. Head. The antennal groove, which is closed behind, reaches far dorsally, so that it is very near the vertex. The grooves are united by a very fine but distinct seam. In the anterior part of the head there are three eyelike organs, two near the fore margin, one above the implantation of the maxillary palp and behind the foremost row of bristles. In the posterior part of the head there are also three eyelike organs, two near the dorsal margin, and one above the middle of the antennal club and behind the foremost row of bristles. The foremost portion of the anterior part and that of the posterior part of the head are finely punctured i. e. provided with numerous extremely fine and minute hairs. Then follows in the anterior part an oblique row of six heavy bristles, behind which one observes a second row of four ditto; then between this row and the eye, eight heavy bristles irregularly placed. The eye itself is ellipsoidal; its fore half is brown, its hind half black; its fore half projects a little into the antennal groove. The gena is provided with a rounded transparent piece.

Among these beetles I found a specimen of a species of the genus Adelotopus Hope, belonging to the interesting family of Pseudomorphidae (Carabicidae), which species certainly has not yet been described. I am acquainted with the description of only two other species of Adelotopus out of Australia, viz. Adelotopus collaris Waterh.¹) from Siam and Adelotopus papuanus Gestro ²) from Papuasia. A third species, described by Waterhouse (l.c.) under the name of Adelotopus marginatus and originating from Java, does not belong to the quoted genus but is synonymical with Cryptocephalomorpha Gaverei Rits. ³) from Java and Sumatra 4), and, after having compared once more the description of A. collaris with that of A. marginatus, I believe that collaris too belongs to the genus Cryptocephalomorpha and not to the genus Adelotopus.

Description: In my paper „0n a Bhawania-specimen, a contribution to our knowledge of tbe Chrysopetalidae” (Notes from the Leyden Museum, Vol. XXX, p. 219, pl. 9) to my great regret I omitted to mention Bhawania Goodei, described by Webster in his „Annelida from Bermuda” (Bulletin of of the United States National Museum, N°. 25, 1884, p. 307). Like as with our specimen, unfortunately no good view of the head was obtained; also the different structure of the upper- and underside of the paleae has not been recognized by Webster. I overlooked also two other species, described by Johnson in his „Preliminary account of the marine Annelids of the Pacific Coast” (Proceed. California Acad, of Sciences, (3) Vol. I, 1897, p. 153), Chrysopetalum occidentale and Heteropale bellis. The genus Heteropale undoubtedly is closely allied to Paleanotus, for it possesses also three antennae and four eyes, the anterior of which are large and crescentshaped; according to Johnson however there is only one tentacular cirrus on each side. Description: Before my departure to Java I intended to give a monographic revision of the Neuropteroidea of Insulinde, but want of time and of sufficient materials forced me to give up this intention and I restricted it to the monographic revision of the MECOPTERA and PLANIPENNIA, the two orders I studied with special attention since 3 years in behalf of the \xe2\x80\x9eCatalogue des collections du baron E. de S\xc3\xa9lys Lougchamps\xe2\x80\x9d.\nThe territories that I name Insulinde are the Dutch colonies of the malayan and papuan archipelago. I describe also the species known from those parts of Borneo and New Guinea, that do not belong to the dutch possessions, as they very probably also will occur in them. Those of neighbouring countries are noted so far as they are important for comparison.

Description: In the following lines I enumerate some birds of New Guinea, which our Museum received in the course of the year 1908. Mr. C. L. J. Palmer van den Broek and Mr. P. J. van Cloven presented to the Museum two small collections of birds, unfortunately mostly unlabelled, which are said to have been collected respectively near Fak-Fak and near Kaukas, western New Guinea, south of the Mac Cluer Gulf. As there are among the skins from Fak-Fak three unlabelled specimens of Schlegelia wilsoni and among those from Kaukas one Geoffroyus personatus rhodops and two Myristicivora melanura, also unlabelled, it is quite sure, that not all the specimens are from the given localities. Of course I mention only those birds, which are provided with a label, but in some cases, regarding rare species, I mention also unlabelled specimens.\nFrom Mr. J. Henkelman we purchased a collection of birds, that are collected on the Owen Stanley Mountains, eastern New Guinea, shot above 3000 feet, some specimens on Mount Victoria at 12000 feet of altitude. Several species are important acquisitions to our collection. Three forms are described as new subspecies.

Description: Amidst sponges, recently collected by my friend Mr. P. J. Buitendijk in the bay of Batavia, I met with a Polychaeteworm, obviously belonging to the genus Bhawania of Schmarda 1). Though I cannot give full information about its structure, because I had only a single specimen at my disposal with its head so far withdrawn that it was quite invisible, nevertheless I think the present communication not without interest, since Schmarda\xe2\x80\x99s description is rather incomplete and there still reigns a good deal of uncertainty about the affinity of the paleae-bearing Polychaetae.\nIt is a slender, flattened worm, measuring 25 mm. in length and 1\xc2\xbd mm. in breadth; the body is only slightly tapering at its anal extremity and has about 175 segments. Its colour is yellowish gray with a somewhat paler dorsal border and a median row of black spots at the ventral side; moreover there is a couple of black patches at the base of each foot, forming along the sides of the body a narrow dark band. The dorsum is entirely covered by the paleae (fig. 1), which are arranged in slightly bent transverse rows, with the concavity directed forward; this concavity increases towards the head and on the anterior segments the rows nearly have the shape of a circle. Each row consists of a left and a right half, each containing in the middle of the body 20 paleae; the median ones of both sides are partly stretching over each other in the middle of the back. The paleae differ somewhat in size in different regions of the body, and in the same row the lateral ones are the longest and extend a little beyond the others. As rightly stated by Ehlers 1) these paleae show a great resemblance with the scales of the butterfly-wing; they consist (figs. 2 and 3) of a shaft, entirely hidden in the dorsum, and a broad distal division. The shaft, measuring about a third of the total length of the bristle, is faintly knee-like bent and becomes somewhat broader in its upper beneath the cuticula lying portion.

Description: In my paper oil the Avifauna of the Netherlands, which I published in the preceding volume of this periodical, I gave a list of all the species observed in our country and an account of the most interesting specimens in the collection of our Museum, with the number of the specimens of each species received during the last years. In those four years, from 1 September 1904 till 1 September 1908, the collection of indigenous birds has been enlarged with about 1900 skins, by donation as well as by purchase. In the academical year from 1 September 1908 till 1 September 1909 this collection has been augmented again with about 675 skins, among which are three specimens belonging to two species, Megalestris skua and Serinus serinus, which were not represented in our collection of native birds. Our collection of indigenous birds becomes by little and little the standard-collection for the study of the avifauna of the Netherlands; it is at present by far the largest and the most complete collection in our country, though, as shown in my list of the Netherland birds, still some rare examples are desiderata to us. Yet, many species are still insufficiently represented and more material, especially that, collected during the breedingperiod, is wanted. Also the collection of the eggs of our birds is not at all up-to-date. The old collection, chiefly originating from Schlegel\xe2\x80\x99s time, fifty at sixty years ago, is of no great value, as the eggs have been exposed to daylight during several years, most of the smaller eggs are very badly blown and the eggs have been preserved in a quite wrong manner, the eggs being left in the nests. It is therefore no wonder, that this collection also requires new material. This year about 560 eggs have been added to the collection. I am sorry that I must state here, that only a very small part of the acquisitions have been presented to us, by far the largest part has been purchased. In opposition to what we read in the annual reports of foreign musea, our museum is presented with very few objects, from our mother-country as well as from our colonies. Yet I believe, that if people knew, how good we can use different specimens, we should receive more; f. i. how many birds of prey, which are very welcome to us, are shot down or caught in traps and innocently thrown away! Here I have the pleasure to mention the following gentlemen, who kindly presented us with specimens for our collection of native birds: D. Bakker, Dr. J. F. van Bemmelen, F. E. Blaauw, J. Boonstra, Ch. J. H. Dumont, R. van Eecke, Jhr. W. C. van Heurn, J. H. Houbolt, H. Leyborne Popham, Jhr. K. W. L. de Muralt, G. R. Peck, F. H. Verster, F. A. Verster van Wulverhorst, J. C. W\xc3\xa4kerlin, P. J. Weyenbergh, L. de Wilde and Mr. R. Baron van Zuylen van Nyevelt. I once again recommend here our collection in the kind favour of every one, who interests himself in our National Museum.\nIn the following lines the most important additions are mentioned.

Description: Among a collection of birds from Western Java, collected for our Museum through the good offices of Mr. E, Jacobson, there are examples of two species, which offer slight differences with specimens from other parts of our Archipelago, so that it seems to me necessary to describe one of them as new subspecies and to explain, that the name given to the other one, must be restricted only to the form from Java.\nSix specimens of a Gerygone I determined as G. modiglianii Salvadori, but as our birds did not fully agree with the description by Count Salvadori (Ann. Mus. Civ. Genova, XXXII, 1892, p. 52) I sent one specimen to that gentleman, with the request to compare it with the types of G. modiglianii. Count Salvadori most kindly, answered me: \xc2\xbb I have compared your Gerygone with two typical specimens of my G. modiqlianii; although very similar it differs in having the upper part and the sides of the head somewhat paler and the lores decidedly more white. The differences are not great, but if constant, as most probably they are, your bird belongs to a distinct form.\xe2\x80\x9d As the colour of the upper parts is the same and also the white loral spot is conspicuous in five old birds, four males and one female, I describe here the form from Java under the name of: Gerygone modiglianii jacobsoni nov. subsp.

\xe2\x99\x80 \xe2\x99\x82 . Without labrutn 7\xc2\xbe \xe2\x80\x94 8\xc2\xbd mm.

Description: In my paper \xe2\x80\x9e0n a Bhawania-specimen, a contribution to our knowledge of tbe Chrysopetalidae\xe2\x80\x9d (Notes from the Leyden Museum, Vol. XXX, p. 219, pl. 9) to my great regret I omitted to mention Bhawania Goodei, described by Webster in his \xe2\x80\x9eAnnelida from Bermuda\xe2\x80\x9d (Bulletin of of the United States National Museum, N\xc2\xb0. 25, 1884, p. 307). Like as with our specimen, unfortunately no good view of the head was obtained; also the different structure of the upper- and underside of the paleae has not been recognized by Webster. I overlooked also two other species, described by Johnson in his \xe2\x80\x9ePreliminary account of the marine Annelids of the Pacific Coast\xe2\x80\x9d (Proceed. California Acad, of Sciences, (3) Vol. I, 1897, p. 153), Chrysopetalum occidentale and Heteropale bellis. The genus Heteropale undoubtedly is closely allied to Paleanotus, for it possesses also three antennae and four eyes, the anterior of which are large and crescentshaped; according to Johnson however there is only one tentacular cirrus on each side.\nLeyden Museum, May 1909.

Description: The female of this species has been described by the Hon. N. C. Rothschild in Novitates Zoologicae, Vol. 12, p. 483 (pl. XIII, fig. 6). The author states that it is allied to Ceratophyllus ahalae Rothsch., and indeed the head of the \xe2\x99\x82 of this species, judging from the figure given by the British Suctoriologist in Novit. Zool. Vol. 11, pl. XI, fig. 51, resembles that of the present species as two peas. The male apparatus, however, differs, though not widely.\nHead.

Description: Close to and much resembling P. lugubris Rits. from Nias (N. L. M. vol. XIV, 1892, p. 215), but smaller (measuring 26 mm. in length) and more vividly colored. Above opaque, the smaller basal half of the elytra, however, shining. \xe2\x80\x94 Head dark blue with green tinges, red in the middle beneath. 1st, 2nd and basal half of 3rd antennal joint dark blue, apical half of 3rd joint and the 4th\xe2\x80\x947th joints yellow, the 7th spotted with black at the apex above, the subsequent joints black. \xe2\x80\x94 Prothorax red, front- and basal margins dark blue, the latter surrounding the coxae and invading the intercoxal part. Without any trace of spine or tubercle laterally; the disk flat, strongly punctured, sharply separated from the sides as if it were a piece led in; the sides and undersurface finely, evenly and very densely punctured, forming a lustreless surface. Scutellum dark blue, with black pubescence. \xe2\x80\x94 Elytra metallic green, the smaller basal half bald, shining, rather densely punctured, the larger apical half opaque, very finely and densely punctured and covered with a short and very dense black pubescence; at one third of its length this black portion is crossed by a very narrow transverse band of a pale yellowish pubescence, touching neither the suture nor the lateral margins, and a similar though still more delicate pubescence is present on the shining green basal half just before the black pubescence. \xe2\x80\x94 Meso- and metasternum and the abdomen steelblue, the latter more greenish towards the apex and covered by a silky white pile, especially on the hindborders. The legs steel-blue, the femora strongly punctured, the tibiae more finely. The 5th ventral segment broadly and deeply emarginate, the 6th broadly but less deeply.\nHab. Borneo: Mahakkam river. \xe2\x80\x94 The described malespecimen has been presented to the Leyden Museum by Prof. A. W. Nieuwenhuis, to whom I dedicate the species.

Description: U. S. Fish Commission Steamer " Albatross " was placed at the disposal of Agassiz, Alexander for an expedition to the Eastern part of the Pacific South of the Panama canl. The collections made during this expedition give ample material for extensive monographs on the holothurians, the siliceous sponges, the cephalopods, the jelly-fishes, the pelagic crustaceans, worms, and fishes of the Eastern Pacific, as well as on the bottom deposits and on the radiolarians and dinoflagellates, diatoms, and other protozoans collected by the tow-nets. Part of the bottom deposits were later sent to Murray John in Scotland for detailed analysis. These observations are reported in: Murray, J. and Lee, G. V., 1909. Reports on the scientific results of the expedition of the" Albatross" to the tropical Pacific, 1899-1900: XII. Memoirs of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard College, 38(1).
