Description: The publication is a contribution to the discussion of institutional and personnel tools of ideological use of ethnography and related scientific disciplines by Nazi Germany in the 1940s in the intentions of its foreign policy plans. It focuses on the efforts of the Third Reich and German researchers to influence the homeland and ethnographic research in Slovakia and follows it on the example of the activities of the Institute for homeland Research (Institut für Heimatforschung) in Kežmarok and those associated with its activities (Franz. J. Beranek and his wife Hertha Wolf-Beranek, Bruno Schier and others). The authors try to clarify the issues concerning the ideological contexts of ethnographic research of the German minority in Slovakia during the Second World War. They draw on period sources that have been preserved in the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and in other archival collections in Slovakia and abroad. The obtained archival data are also analysed with regard to the current research of the monitored issues in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. At the same time, the researched examples of the influence of Nazi ideology on the activity of specific personalities and institutions during the Second World War inspire a broader discussion on the relationship between political ideologies and science.

Description: The book is a unique combination of stories that its authors, Katarína Haberlandová and Ľubica Voľanská, have been collecting for several years. It is the story of the Avion apartment building (including the monument care related to this house under several political regimes, in terms of daily maintenance and, since 1985, monument protection). At the same time, it is the story of its inhabitants directly connected with the building and life in it. Last but not least, it is the story of the author of Avion’s designs, the architect Josef Marek (1889-1966). In the stories, there is a visible interweaving of big and small histories, as all the stories mentioned above take place in a particular space and time, having in the background the history of Bratislava but also of the wider region or state formations of which the city and the place were a part of. The authors used two approaches – historical-architectural and art-historical; the other is ethnological/anthropological, based on the oral history method. This interdisciplinarity has helped create a book that is still unique in Slovakia, deepening the scientific knowledge in the fields of 20th-century architectural history and ethnology/social anthropology. At the same time, the book offers an engagingly grasped story to a broader public that would not usually reach for academic literature in these fields. Moreover, the way the book is written makes it possible to reflect the story of the house and its inhabitants, even for those readers who may not have had in-depth knowledge of it until now. Indeed, many aspects analysed through the authentic accounts of Avion’s male and female residents are universal to our history. In different variations or shades, they took place not only in other apartment buildings in Bratislava but also influenced and moved the inhabitants’ lives in other Slovakia cities. Finally, new impulses are emerging for the elaboration of research on the everyday life associated with the Avion apartment house, especially in the areas of the politics of memory and forgetting, the history of the politics of cooperative housing in Slovakia in the 20th century, the conservation of modern architectural heritage, as well as community-based ways of caring for housing in the present day. A significant role will continue to be played by linking Avion citizens’ good and the not-so-good stories and memories.

Description: Kniha predstavuje jedinečné spojenie príbehov, ktoré jej autorky Katarína Haberlandová a Ľubica Voľanská zbierali niekoľko rokov.

Description: Title in English: Andrej Melicherčík – personality in time, time in personality. The publication is dedicated to one of the founding personalities of modern professional ethnography and folklore studies – prof. PhDr. A. Melicherčík, CSc. (1917-1966). The author has collected and interpreted numerous factual data about Melicherčík´s university studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Slovak University, but especially about his work at Matica slovenská, at the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts and at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University. She characterizes his numerous activities in the field of organization of scientific life and pedagogical work. The author pays special attention to the methodological approaches that A. Melicherčík applied in his scientific work – functional structuralism and historical materialism. In both approaches, he was the initiator of their application in ethnography and folklore studies in Slovakia. The author analyses his work chronologically – studies, monographs and synthetic publications in terms of concepts, research topics and the organizational grasp of their research and publication. She points out the possible influences of scientific personalities (P. G. Bogatyriov, B. Schier et al.), as well as the non-scientific circumstances that influenced Melicherčík’s understanding of the subject, methods and instrumentalization of ethnography and folklore studies.

Description: Publikácia je venovaná jednej zo zakladateľských osobností modernej profesionálnej etnografie a folkloristiky – prof. PhDr. A. Melicherčíkovi, CSc. (1917-1966). Autorka chronologicky analyzuje v tomto duchu jeho práce – štúdie, monografie i syntetické publikácie z hľadiska konceptov, výskumných tém a organizačného uchopenia ich výskumného a publikačného spracovania. Poukazuje na možné vplyvy vedeckých osobností (P. G. Bogatyriov, B. Schier ai.), tiež na mimovedecké okolnosti, ktoré ovplyvnili Melicherčíkovo chápanie predmetu, metód a inštrumentalizáciu etnografie a folkloristiky. Komplementárnou súčasťou publikácie je personálna bibliografia A. Melicherčíka, keďže doteraz takáto nebola spracovaná. Publikáciu dopĺňajú fotografie a kópie dobových dokumentov.

Description: Title in English: Seven (Jewish) problems: Social culture of the Jewish community from the perspective of ethnology. Based on his long-term research, the author presents a professional and personal perspective on selected problems of the contemporary Jewish community in Slovakia in the seven chapters of his book. The author devotes ample space to how the Jewish community reflected two totalitarian systems (the Holocaust and the period of Communism). He also notes the specificity of ethnological research, voluntary and forced migration processes, the issue of abandoned synagogues and cemeteries, or the phenomenon of “Jewish time.” The book’s final parts focus on social culture’s problems (identity development, Jewish family, humor).

Description: Title: Dust or ashes: Cremation in the Jewish community in Slovakia from the perspective of ethnology. Traditional Judaism accepts only the burial of remains in the ground and fundamentally rejects cremation. Nevertheless, in recent decades, Jewish community members have increasingly preferred burial in a crematorium. In the last decade, cremation has been the majority form of burial. Based on long-term archival and ethnological research, Peter Salner analyzes the causes and consequences of the spread of this religiously forbidden and practically unknown trend in the past. The author notes that in most cases, cremation is not a sign of an effort to hide or reject Jewish identity. He interprets this burial method as the result of a change in values after the Holocaust and during the period of communist rule. As one of the proofs, he cites the wish of the members of the community to be able to place the urns of their loved ones on Jewish land. The result of these efforts is the fact that the leadership of the Jewish Religious Community approved the construction of a columbarium on the premises of the Neological Cemetery in Bratislava after lengthy discussions in 2007. Based on the findings, the author concluded that the spread of cremation represents a form of post-Holocaust non-religious Jewish identity.
    Description: Published
Description: Tradičný judaizmus akceptuje výlučne pochovanie pozostatkov do zeme a zásadne odmieta kremáciu. Napriek tomu v posledných desaťročiach desaťročiach príslušníci židovskej komunity stále častejšie uprednostňujú pohreb v krematóriu. V poslednom desaťročí spopolnenie predstavuje dokonca väčšinovú formu pohrebu. Peter Salner na základe dlhodobých archívnych a etnologických výskumov analyzuje príčiny a následky rozšírenia tohto v minulosti religiózne zakazovaného a prakticky neznámeho trendu.

Description: Acta Slavica Estonica is an international series of publications on current issues of Russian and other Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. This volume is part of the subseries Studia Russica Helsingiensia et Tartuensia, XIV, and unites scholars from Estonia, Finland, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and Canada who belong to the tradition of the Tartu Lotman school. This collective monograph explores the development of national myth on the basis of a variety of materials from Russian culture, beginning from the Late Middle Ages and finishing with the Soviet epoch. The main part of the study is devoted to the Imperial period — the epoch during which the notion of nation arises. Analyzing the mechanisms used to construct national ideology, the authors especially stress the participation of literature and art in nation building: the role of the press, theatre, writers and their works in their dependence upon historical matters and political conjuncture.

Description: Acta Slavica Estonica is an international series of publications on current issues of Russian and other Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. The volume „Anthropocentrism in language and speech” was prepared in memory of Mikhail Shelyakin (1927–2011), a long-time professor of the Russian language at the University of Tartu. The relation between language and the human being was M. Shelyakin’s central topic during the final period of his research. The articles focus on anthropocentrism of the linguistic sign and its realization in speech. They continue and develop the problems studied by M. Shelyakin mainly on the basis of Russian. The volume consists of three parts: anthropocentrism in word-formation and grammar, anthropocentrism in phraseology and the lexical system, and the impact of anthropocentrism on contrastive studies, translation, and the teaching of foreign languages.

Description: Acta Slavica Estonica is an international series of publications on current issues of Russian and other Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. One of the fundamental oppositions of the semiotics of culture – between “own” (native) and “alien” (foreign) – is also important for the language, which is the foundation of any ethnic culture and in which “our own”, originally inherent in a given language, constituting its basis, and elements of the “alien” at different levels of the language always coexist. The articles in this collection make their contribution to the study of the cultural and social characteristics of the language by studying the complex interaction of “own” and “alien” in language and speech.
