    Notes: Abstract The Complex Variable Boundary Element Method or CVBEM has been used to develop a simple but powerful numerical analog of contaminant transport in a saturated, confined groundwater aquifer. The presented numerical technique is based upon a mean-square fit of the boundary conditions which includes the effects of sources and sinks defined within the problem domain. The numerical analogue produces locations of streamlines and the time-evolution of the contaminant front location.

    Notes: Abstract The present paper re-defines the parameters of the dynamic relaxation method for static problems and examines how they affect the rate of convergence of the method. A new adaptive scheme is proposed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the method. The scheme involves using the current residual vector to update the lower frequency limit during integration and to improve the accuracy of the converged solution. The new approach compares favorably with the results of a previously proposed adaptive method.

    Notes: Abstract The paper describes a special finite element for three-dimensional, large displacement analysis of contact problems with slip and friction. This element may be used to model contact between several finite element bodies or contact between a finite element body and a flexible or rigid geometrical surface fixed in space or moving with time. The contact formulation is based on the concept of a spring-supported, moving disk that transfers normal contact forces and Coulomb friction forces. The contact surface has a finite, prescribed boundary. The contact element has been incorporated into the general-purpose, nonlinear, finite element program FENRIS. Three examples of its application are described in the paper.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of structural isolation from ground transmitted vibrations by open or infilled trenches under conditions of plane strain is numerically studied. The soil medium is assumed to be linear elastic or viscoelastic, homogeneous and isotropic. Horizontally propagating Rayleigh waves or waves generated by the motion of a rigid foundation or by surface blasting are considered in this work. The formulation and solution of the problem is accomplished by the boundary element method in the frequency domain for harmonic disturbances or in conjunction with Laplace transform for transient disturbances. The proposed method, which requires a discretisation of only the trench perimeter, the soil-foundation interface and some portion of the free soil surface on either side of the trench appears to be better than either finite element or finite difference techniques. Some parametric studies are also conducted to assess the importance of the various geometrical, material and dynamic input parameters and provide useful guidelines to the design engineer.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the elastostatic contact problem of a semi-infinite cylinder compressed against a layer lying on a rigid foundation. It is assumed that all the contacting surfaces are frictionless and that only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the interfaces. Upon loading the contact along the layer-foundation interface shrinks to a circular area whose radius is unknown. The analysis leads to a system of singular integral equations of the second kind. The integral equations are solved numerically and the contact pressures, extent of the contact area between the layer and the foundation, and the stress intensity factor round the edge of the cylinder are calculated for various material pairs.

    Notes: Abstract The use of the Helmholtz decomposition for exterior incompressible viscous flows is examined, with special emphasis on the issue of the boundary conditions for the vorticity. The problem is addressed by using the decomposition for the infinite space; that is, by using a representation for the velocity that is valid for both the fluid region and the region inside the boundary surface. The motion of the boundary is described as the limiting case of a sequence of impulsive accelerations. It is shown that at each instant of velocity discontinuity, vorticity is generated by the boundary condition on the normal component of the velocity, for both inviscid and viscous flows. In viscous flows, the vorticity is then diffused into the surroundings: this yields that the no-slip conditions are thus automatically satisfied (since the presence of a vortex layer on the surface is required to obtain a velocity slip at the boundary). This result is then used to show that in order for the solution to the Euler equations to be the limit of the solution to the Navier-Stokes equations, a trailing-edge condition (that the vortices be shed as soon as they are formed) must be satisfied. The use of the results for a computational scheme is also discussed. Finally, Lighthill's transpiration velocity is interpreted in terms of Helmholtz decomposition, and extended to unsteady compressible flows.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents an iteration scheme for parameter dependent problems such as those which arise in the analysis of nearly incompressible continua. The proposed method is a generalization of the one previously given by one of the present authors, and may be also regarded as a generalization of the popular augmented Lagrangian method. We present the scheme and convergence theorems with some observations for convergence, and give comments on the applications of our approach to the mixed finite element method.
