    Notes: Abstract.  Based on a theoretical analysis for injection-locked transversely excited atmospheric CO2 lasers, we proposed and demonstrated a time-gated injection technique for stabilization of the evolution of laser pulses. Spread of the build-up time as well as the time jitter is reduced by temporal control of the injection.

    Notes: Abstract.  A theoretical calculation of optical second-harmonic generation from a free-electron-like metal surface is presented. The metal is assumed to be semi-infinite with a flat surface. An excitation by a plane monochromatic electromagnetic wave incident upon the surface is considered in two geometries: (i) free surface and (ii) prism coupler in Otto configuration. The analytical expression of the second-harmonic reflectivity in the full hydrodynamic approach is derived. The important point is that the formalism we use leads to an analytical expression of this reflectivity. This allows an easy physical insight into the second-harmonic process at metal surfaces. The result is compared with previous calculations. It is also demonstrated how easily this calculation can be extended to the prism coupler.

    Notes: Abstract.  The subpicosecond time-resolved optical Kerr effect was used to determine the non-resonant optical nonlinearity of a new kind polynitrile: polybenzonitrile at a wavelength of 647 nm. A power-law dependence of the second-order hyperpolarizability γ1111 of the polybenzonitrile molecule on the average – polymerization – degree was discussed. From the transient response, which was primarily pulse limited, the relaxation time of the samples has been proved to be shorter than the laser pulse width.

    Notes: Abstract.  The degree of second-order coherence g (2)(τ) and its frequency-dependent formula of a two-longitudinal-mode laser (simply called two-mode laser) are derived from the quantum theory of light. The quasi-periodicity, frequency-dependent characteristics and photon statistics properties of g (2)(τ) are analysed theoretically. It is found that for a two-mode laser field there exists the effect of photon anticorrelation and the g (2)(τ) can be measured by the optical interference method. The frequency-tuning characteristics of g (2)(τ) in the two-mode laser field is also analysed. It is shown that the frequency-dependent characteristics of g (2)(τ) can be applied to frequency and power stabilization of the two-mode laser and the measurement of two-mode laser linewidth ΔνD and the frequency width δνh of each longitudinal-mode, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract.  A generalized systematic description of the Two-Wave Mixing (TWM) process in sillenite crystals allowing for arbitrary orientation of the grating vector is presented. An analytical expression for the TWM gain is obtained for the special case of plane waves in a thin crystal (∣g∣d≪1) with large optical activity (∣g∣/ϱ≪1, g is the coupling constant, ϱ the rotatory power, d the crystal thickness). Using a two-dimensional formulation the scope of the nonlinear equations describing TWM can be extended to finite beams in arbitrary geometries and to any crystal parameters. Two promising applications of this formulation are proposed. The polarization dependence of the TWM gain is used for the flattening of Gaussian beam profiles without expanding them. The dependence of the TWM gain on the interaction length is used for the determination of the crystal orientation. Experiments carried out on Bi12GeO20 crystals of a non-standard cut are in good agreement with the results of modelling.

    Notes: Abstract.  Experimental investigations of the photon’s B (3)-field (third longitudinal polarization) are reported. The existence of an “axial magnetostatic field of photon” has been predicted in B π or B (3)-theory as the fundamental property of the circularly polarized light, and reported in numerous papers and monographs. High-sensitivity detection has been employed in photomagnetic induction, Faraday, and inverse Faraday effects (IFE) originating from such a field. The results of all three experiments clearly disprove the claims of B π-theory. Putting together these results and theoretical calculations in perspective, it is concluded that such fields are non-existent.

    Notes: Abstract.  Surface oxidation of CuS nanocrystals leads to the appearance of an additional absorption band in the near infrared. This is attributed to an energy level in the band gap, 1 eV below the conduction band, with the character of an electron donor. Bleaching of this additional absorption band and induced absorption in both oxidized and unmodified samples take place. An energy level scheme for CuS and CuS(ox) nanocrystals with long-lived trap levels in the band gap is proposed. The relaxation time from the conduction band to these trap levels is ∼80 ps. The relaxation of electrons from trap levels has characteristic times of more than 1 ns.

    Notes: Abstract In both fundamental and applied surface physics, it is essential to know as much as possible about the chemical composition of the outer atomic layers of solids. Rapid progress has recently been made in the development of analytical methods which could be used in surface analysis. All utilize some type of emission (photons, electrons, atoms, molecules, ions), caused by excitation of the surface states. Both the “excitation” and emission processes must meet certain basic requirements as regards information depth, form in which the information is obtained, sensitivity, changes in the surface layer during analysis, etc. The more important of the methods that qualify, namely Auger-Electron Spectroscopy (AES), photo-Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) and the static method of Secondary-Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), are discussed and their potentialities and limitations illustrated by characteristic examples.

    Notes: Abstract The long-range diffusion of deuterium in tantalum has been investigated as a function of temperature by means of the anelastic process due to redistribution of deuterium impurities between compressed and dilated regions of the sample, under an applied stress alternating at about 4 Hz. The diffusion coefficient was found to obey an Arrhenius-type law in the temperature range 200–390 K; a deviation was observed at lower temperatures. The diffusion parameters in the exponential region areD 0D=(3.3±1.5)×10−4 cm2/s, andW D=(0.176±0.008) eV.
